Christian Malford WI

Last night we performed for the third time for the Christian Malford WI at their Christmas party.

The village hall was packed for the event, and there was a buzz all around the hall for our first half performance – although this was generated more by a need by the ladies to socialise with their friends than a yearning after our singing. But we did manage to engage with them for the singing of our final two songs of the session and we stopped for refreshments at 8:00pm.

Towards the end of the break period we were all entertained by a local story teller who read one of her compositions. The hall was deadly silent during her marvellous story telling, but we got the atmosphere buzzing once more when we started our second session. The music was designed to encourage some dancing – and it immediately had an effect!

Our climax, which included two Beatles songs and one by Status Quo, was a leap into the unknown as we had never previously performed those songs in public. However, by this time we had most of the WI on their feet and dancing, and everyone enjoyed themselves. A raffle was held at the end of our performance, and then we sang through ‘White Christmas’ and ‘We Wish You A Merry Christmas’. This prompted calls for an encore and so we launched into ‘Amarillo’ to finish a fantastic evening of fun in Christian Malford.

All singers were present this evening, and our programme was:-

Calne Morning WI

This morning we had an early start – making it across to Calne for a 10:15am performance for the Calne Morning WI in Marden House.

This was out third performance for this WI in the last two years, and there was a large audience to greet us. We had been specifically asked to perform a Glen Campbell song for this occasion, but we discovered that the lady who requested the song had been taken ill. However, our rendition of ‘Rhinestone Cowboy’ was recorded so that she could hear it at a later date.

All the singers were present this morning.

After the performance we were offered tea/coffee and an array of seasonal cakes. Our thanks go out to the organisers of the event for their marvellous hospitality. We began the performance with the singing of Jerusalem, and followed with our programme (shown below). Our songs encouraged a few to dance along to the music, and by the time we had reached our last song we had the majority of the audience singing or dancing to ‘Do You Love Me’.

Dauntsey WI

Last night the group entertained the Dauntsey WI at the Canal Centre in Dauntsey, near Chippenham.

Eleven members of the WI were present for their Christmas party – a similar number to when we performed for them in September 2015. They held a short meeting prior to our performance, and then we launched into the programme shown below. When asked if there was anyone with a birthday there were no takers – except our own Dave Sperritt who had his birthday last Sunday. So, we sang Happy Birthday to Dave and everyone joined in.

Brian Ellis could not be with us this evening.

At the end of the performance we were treated to a vast spread of savoury and sweet food items prepared by the ladies. There was too much food for the number of people in the room, but the guys did their best to reduce the food pile! Our thanks go to all the ladies who provided the banquet.

Boxlea WI

Last night we performed at the Selwyn Hall, Box for the Boxlea WI.

It proved difficult for most of us to drive down the busy approach road and then park our cars due to another event finishing around that time of the evening. But we all managed to be in our seats in time for the beginning of an excellent buffet. The food consisted of cold meats, jacket potatoes and salad – followed by an array of delicious sweets.

It then became an effort for most of us to climb up onto the stage and perform our programme! There was a great party atmosphere in the hall as we went through our songs. Most of the audience knew our material and joined in the singing. There were a few times when members got up and danced along to the music – encouraged a few glasses of Prosecco.

Two of our singers were unable to be with us: Brian Ellis; and John Webb. Our programme is shown below.

  1. You Got It
  2. Sugar And Spice

Christmas Carols

Sherston WI

Yesterday afternoon we visited the newly refurbished British School Rooms in Sherston to perform for the local WI.

We were all very impressed with the room where we performed, and I did hear very nice comments on the state of the lavatories! Today’s audience included our very own Trackette Pat who is a member of the Sherston WI.

Two of our singers were unable to be with us for the performance: John Johnston; and John Webb. Our programme needed to be adjusted to fit into the changed timescales: the event started later than planned and we were asked to fit-in an interval to allow everyone to have a cup of tea.

During the interval I spoke to one member who recalled to me how she obtained the autograph of Roy Orbison. She had been waiting at the stage door hoping to see Roy at one of his performances. Another young woman near the stage door asked if she could help, and promised she could get his signature. That woman was Marianne Faithfull and she duly went inside and got that autograph!

Malmesbury Parkinsons

Last night we performed at the Malmesbury Town Hall for the Malmesbury Parkinsons Group.

The evening started with an exercise class of line dancing to get the audience limbered-up for our performance. We joined in the exercise to amuse ourselves and the audience, but one or two singers later regretted the resulting aches caused by the unusual movements of their bodies.

The start of the entertainment was delayed due to parking problems in the market square car park. Indeed, our singer Jack could not find any nearby car parking and he had to park in the distant long-stay car park behind Malmesbury Abbey. On arrival he was quite out of breath due to the high number of steps needing to climb to get out of that car park!

All our singers were present for the performance, and Trackette Valerie was a member of the audience. Our programme was as follows:-

  1. You Got It
  2. Sugar And Spice
  3. Rhinestone Cowboy
  4. Can’t Help Falling In Love

Thursday Club at Shipton Moyne

This morning we performed for the Thursday Club in the Village Hall of Shipton Moyne, close to Malmesbury. The club had shifted their December meeting from a Thursday to a Wednesday just so that they could be entertained by our group.

There were a few more men in the Thursday Club this year. We started our performance at 10:45am – quite an early start for us singers – and sang through an hour-long programme before finishing with ‘I’m Dreaming Of A White Christmas’. The whole audience joined us in the singing of that song. The full programme is shown below.

All the singing members of the group were present this morning, and we enjoyed tea and coffee after the entertainment. The organiser was quick to ask for our return in December 2018.

Next Gig: Shipton Moyne

Our next performance will be at 10:45am on Wednesday (6th December 2017) in the Village Hall at Shipton Moyne, Malmesbury where the audience will be the Thursday Club.

Yes. The ‘Thursday Club’ are meeting this week on a Wednesday – and this has been specially arranged so that our group can entertain them. We had prior bookings on Thursday that meant we could only manage this Wednesday. We hope to bring the same level of enjoyment to the members as we did with last year’s performance.

Fairways Care Home, Chippenham

This afternoon we performed for the residents of the Fairways Care Home in Chippenham.

There were a number of familiar faces in the audience – including Ron Morgan who is known to us through his membership of the Chippenham Male Voice Choir. He seemed to enjoy meeting up with us again, and he joined in (from his seat) with several of our songs.

At the end of our performance the Activities Co-ordinator Mary purchased one of our ‘Golden Tracks’ CDs on behalf of the residents so that they could be reminded of our songs until we meet again in the New Year.

Missing singers today were Nick Greene and Dave Sperritt. Our programme is shown below.

  2. Sugar And Spice
  3. Can’t Help Falling In Love
