Sherston Seniors Club

This afternoon we returned to Sherston for our annual performance to the Seniors Club.

The venue is normally the Old School Rooms but this year it was not possible to use these rooms. Instead, we were asked to perform in ‘The Carpenters Arms’ which is one of the village’s pubs.

The landlord warmly welcomed us on our first visit to the pub with drinks ‘on the house’, and that set the tone for a really pleasant afternoon of singing to a packed audience. The start of the performance was slightly delayed to allow late-comers to find seats. Then it was announced that it was Rosemary’s birthday and so we led the singing of Happy Birthday. The audience surrounded us on three sides and that helped to create an intimate atmosphere.

We were without singers Dave Hackett and local boy Roger Whitehouse for today’s performance. The programme for the 40 minute performance is shown below.

Barnhill Court Summer Party

This afternoon we provided the musical backdrop to the Summer Party held at Barnhill Court in Chipping Sodbury.

This was our second appearance at this residential site which houses 60 retirement apartments, and we were accompanied by four of our wives – perhaps the scones and cream had attracted them to this venue!

We were located in the restaurant area: at one end of the restaurant the cream teas were being served as well as glasses of Pimms; external doors led onto a terrace where many of the residents sat in bright sunshine. The home’s reception area was taken over by stalls selling various items to raise funds for the Royal Voluntary Service.

The party was well attended by the residents, and several of them could be seen singing along to our music as they moved around the restaurant.

Singer Roger Whitehouse was missing today’s performance due to another commitment in France. We sang in two sessions with an interval for a cream tea: the first session was between 3:15 and 4:00pm; the second session was delayed by a lengthy raffle draw and started at 4:45pm. We finished at 5:05pm with an encore. The programme is shown below:-

Stourhead Scones & Songs Event

The group will be performing at a special event organised for the Stourhead National Trust site on Sunday 24th September 2017.

The event will celebrate the humble ‘scone’ which is a mainstay of the National Trust menu and a British tradition. This is being combined with another British tradition – local choir singing.

More details will be issued nearer the date, but the group will be singing at three separate locations within the estate grounds between 12:00 and 2:00pm.

Chippenham Stroke Club

This afternoon we performed for the Chippenham Stroke Club at the Kingsley Road Community Centre.

This was the first time that the group had appeared at this centre, although we had previously entertained the Stroke Club a few years ago at the Pewsham Community Centre.

There was a good turn-out by the audience, and they enjoyed joining the singing for many of the songs. We received a great round of applause at the end – before being invited to have tea and biscuits.

Three singers were unavailable today: Dave Hackett (ill health); John Johnston (medical treatment); and Roger Whitehouse (away in France). Our next appearance is at Barnhill Court, Chipping Sodbury this coming Saturday 8th July 2017.

Today’s one hour programme was as follows:-

1) Georgy Girl

Stourhead Request

An invitation has been received by the group to take part in a series of events being held by the National Trust in the estate grounds of Stourhead, Wiltshire during the month of September.

The proposal is to have local choirs entertain at each weekend in the month whilst visitors are encouraged to relax and enjoy cream teas.

The group are considering whether to participate in this outdoor activity. We have previously participated three times in the Stourhead annual ‘Festival Of The Voice’ event – but this has not run for the last couple of years. On two of those previous occasions we were blessed with good weather, but suffered heavy rain the other time.

Shockerwick House

This afternoon we returned to Shockerwick House – a residential and nursing care home run by BUPA on the outskirts of the beautiful city of Bath.

Last month we performed in the gardens of the home at their Summer fete. This time we were positioned in the impression reception hallway of this historic house. We had been asked to perform in that area to allow our sounds to travel upwards to the first floor rooms – where we were told other residents would be listening.

We were pleased to see again Sylvia in our audience. This lady impressed us all at the fete when she enthusiastically danced in front of us (with the aid of a zimmer frame!). And we were pleased to see her enjoying today’s repertoire – alongside a gentleman of 96 years.

Dave Hackett could not be present today due to ill health.

Today’s programme is shown below:-

‘Golden Tracks’ Sales

Latest sales figures for the group’s latest album show that 74 CDs have been sold. The majority of those sales have been made by the members of the group, but 25 are recorded as concert sales.

Singer Dave Hackett is the leading salesman of the group – having sold 12 CDs. He is followed by John Webb with 11 sales.

The sales and donations received since the album went on sale in April 2017 are nearing the overall cost of producing it.

Derryck Evans House Celebrations Party

This afternoon we performed for the first time for the residents of the Derryck Evans House retirement/sheltered community group in Liden, Swindon.

The occasion was the ‘Celebrations Party’ which is held every year to acknowledge seven residents who celebrate events at this time of the year. This year was a special year because it marked the birthdays of Pauline (103), Fred (90), Audrey (85), Val (75) and Dave (70) – as well as the 50th wedding anniversary of Ann and Geoff.

A cake had been prepared for the occasion, and we were flattered by the photograph that appeared on top of the cake:-

DEH Cake

This is the first time that we can remember watching an audience sinking their teeth into us as we performed for them! Our thanks go to Val Barker for organising the event and providing us with a fabulous buffet spread.
